The patient LF was on level 2;15 inside the ward, and level 1 in the garden. The mentioned patient went out to the garden. I went out with her, as it was my turn to be on the level 1 with her. When she went out she appeared settled; outside in the garden she walked with her earphones on listening to music, as she usually does. She walked around the basketball court, going around approximately 8 times, and went straight in. when she was outside I opened the door for her to go out, and when she came in I closed the door after her coming into the ward.
When I was closing the door I started to hear a strong noise, as if something was being hit. I continued closing the door, and the noise carried on. I moved from the lounge of the ward to the corridor of the ward, and the sound became stronger; so I went to find out what was the reason of the noise. I asked Catherine , another nurse if she knew, and we both went, as well as with Steve to see what was the reason fr this noise. As I walked closer to EF room and reached her door I saw her with something being hold, looked like a chair, hitting the door of her room. Immediately Steve told me to pull the alarm, which he did, and we moved back.
The police was called, and the CNR team arrived to the ward. The CNR team took approximately 90 seconds before arriving. During this time Steve tried to hold the door of EF room , but as she was hitting the door, it was dangerous to carry on holding it. I remained in the corridor, until the CNR team arrived. When the CNR team arrived, Trevor, who was within this team, ordered me to back up, which I did.
I went to the lounge, and when I got there I realized that some patients were still in their rooms, especially Margaret, a wheelchair user. So I came out of the lounge and walked to the corridor, but Margaret was being brought. I went with her and the accompanying staff member into the lounge.
Then it was decided to move all the people to the garden, so I helped in moving patients from the lounge into the garden were I remained, until the situation was normalized.
In the garden the patients were tense, as they didn’t seem to have a clear idea of what was happening.
The incident had a duration of approximately 35- 40 minutes.
